9 Ways not to Own a car. Or die laughing. Take your pick
Huffington post recently wrote a story entitled 9 Ways to Not Own a Car.
Like most how not to own car editorials it is written purely for people who live in cities.
Those of us who live in rural parts of America pretty much can not do any of these things.
A Small Example as follows.
Using my own status qou, I attempt to point out how this will not work.
First take the time to look up Washburn, Missouri. That is not where I live, but it is the closest city too me. I live a good 12 miles from Washburn. I work in Monett, MO
It’s 38 miles from my house to my job, one way.
My daughter will be going to school in Rogers, AR. It’s 18 miles from our house to Rogers.
- Item 1: I have 1 Co worker who lives 5 minutes from work and 3 miles. I live 38 miles and 45 minutes. No carpooling
- Item 2: Walking Bus for my kid? 18 miles to school? Are you high?
- Item 3: Bike 38 miles one way to my job? BWHAHAHAHAHAHA. Yeah I’ll get right on that.
- Item 4: the nearest ZipCar location is 421 miles from me. In fact there isn’t one even in my State. Next.
- Item 5: Taxi? According to the nearest Taxi company (in the next county) for them to drive me to and from my job will cost me $18 bucks per trip. Uhm. No.
- Item 6: Rollerblades? Your kidding right? Please see Item 3 response
- Item 7: Train? Seriously a train? There isn’t a commuter train within 400 miles of me
- Item 8: Walking? Please see Item 6 and Item 3. This is only feasible if I work 2 days a week as the rest of the week will be spent getting to and from work
- Item 9: No one delivers to my home. Jehovah Witness, Vacuum Salesmen and Census Agents do not even come to my home, ok? The nearest delivery restaurant is 14 miles away.
If you really want to make a environmental impact and do something useful, cough up some of your city cash to get us garbage service with recycle ability. Get us some high speed internet.
Better yet build that commuter train. I’ll ride it.
