Another step forward

Been a red letter week around here.

I got back from Washington D.C. late last week, but just in time to help my wife plan our daughters first real birthday party with people who weren’t family.

When I was a kid we never had the Hollywood-stereotypical parties. No balloons, clowns and a yard full of friends. It was always family. No neighbors, no friends, just family members. My wife is the opposite, hers were a variety of folks. I don’t reckon I suffered over it, I never knew anything different, but the concept of it being a mostly non-immediate family member event is foreign to me beyond popular media.

The one dark spot this week is that my In-Laws won’t be in town this week. For over a decade they have came to town during Thanksgiving to celebrate Critters birthday and have Thanksgiving with us. For the the first time her grandparents were not here for her birthday and wont be for the holiday. She isn’t sure how to take it, and is pretty bummed. They both have had extensive medical problems preventing the trip.

So the party with our neighbors and two of my daughters friends (one of whom is twice her age) still was a big deal for the kiddo. It was something she had never had before and she wasn’t used to being the focal point of attention for outsiders. She handled it well however I think and had a good time.

In other news I got promoted while I was traveling. My boss announced it to my by phone, which is funny when you think about it. I’m gone so much is the only way he could reach me.

Lastly my prospectus has been sent over to my program director for review. Means my committee has approved, and once the PD signs off on it I can start chapter 1 of my dissertation.

It’s  been a good couple of days. The paranoid part of me, however, keeps waiting for the other shoe to drop.
