The Famine began quite mysteriously in September 1845 as leaves on potato plants suddenly turned black and curled, then rotted, seemingly the result of a fog that had wafted across the fields of Ireland. I have been told that the cause was actually an airborne fungus originally transported in the holds of ships traveling from North America to England. Somewhat ironic then if you consider home many Irish families in turn fled to North America because of it. Let no one say we Irish have not had a sense of humor in the annuals of history.

In Any event, The Great Famine was a period of mass starvation, disease and emigration between 1845 and 1852. Outside of Ireland it is more commonly called The Irish Potatoe Famine. Within Ireland, and amongst my own family it was referred to as an Gorta Mór or great hunger.

I first published my recipe last year, thought I would share it once again! -BS

Currently being made here at the Wilderness Retreat

Currently being made here at the Wilderness Retreat

Folks who say the Irish are horrible cooks are fools. Just my opinion. The Irish have some of the best meals around in my book, and if your a meat-and-potatoes kind of person who has been eating pasta instead, you are truly missing out.

You don’t have to just eat this recipe on St Patrick’s Day. While it is traditional, much like eating black-eyed pea’s on New Years Day is in America, Irish Stew can be made and eaten pretty much anytime just as its American counter part.

I recommend it throughout the winter months, and if you have friends over.

This is my family recipe mind you, so treat it well, Aye?

If you don’t like it feel free to blame us. If you do, just share a wee bit o the credit. :)

Yes Folks. It is indeed that time again.

Feel Free to use this image and link back to this post!

Those of you new around here may recall the annual Techography St. Patrick’s Day Blog Bash. The more recent may have attended last years Bash.

This marks the 6th year we have held it, and even though I’m not technically with Techography anymore we are still affiliated. Thusly since I am the host we’re still counting those days.

Effectively it’s my party and I can count it if I want too by gawd.

The last few years have gotten us more folks however and I’m looking forward to this year.

As is the usual we will be holding our Blog Bash at The Celtic Grill in Bentonville, AR that “bastion of Ireland” in Arkansas.

While Bentonville may not be home to a high Irish population, the Grill is without a doubt the most authentic location in the region and it’s typically home to at least one real Irishman, two or three times a month or more (namely yours truly).

Every St Patrick’s Day said Irishman brings a whole bunch of his web reading/writing buddies as well as friends for a night of cold Guinness, Irish Stew, and Reuben Sandwiches.

We hope to see ya there! Party starts when we show up. If you need my contact information drop me a comment here, using your E-mail address and I will contact you with my own information. I also typically give a description of our clothing so you have an idea who to look for. We even manage to give our trinkets for your attending from necklaces to autographed hats.

I have that day off so I will be there early, however as 90% of the time it’s standing room early we’ll try to get a table.

As added incentive true early birds will get one of my signature Erin Go Bragh cigars to smoke with your truly as well!

Since somebody sent me an E-mail, which went to my phone, which woke me up from my sleep, which requested my chicken soup recipe because I posted on Facebook that I was making some, I figured what the hell. I don’t have to be a total waste of flesh today and a lot of other folks are sick and this my cure-all.

So here is my crock pot chicken soup recipe.

Enjoy!

I originally posted this back in 2004 at Techography. It’s short and sweet, like all Thanksgiving posts should be in my opinion. The time isn’t one for waxing eloquent, or long drawn out speeches. Its one for reflection. – BS

I could try to write something poetic. I could try to write something intriguing, in depth and hammering, tear jerking or maybe even emotional.

I’ll leave it to Doc Russia and the rest to write serious pieces.

Instead I’ll let someone else’s words fit the bill for me this Thanksgiving.

Given our quote today I thought I’d spread a little temptation

is that time of year again when the noble Germans hold a celebration that was probably created by an Irishman.

It has been several years since I was in Germany, but Yes my friends I mean Oktoberfest.

When a good Germans gaze turns to beer, and girls, and beer, and girls, and girls and beer and …..maybe an occasional bratwurst.

Just for fun and to help us get through the week I figured I’d share some girls, and beer, and girls, and beer and…

oh to hell with and just keep reading….it’s relatively safe for work….save for that whole lack of production thing. And wipe the drool when your done.

Had some red wine last night almost always results in a nice deep sleep for yours truly, no matter the amount. One glass or one bottle I sleep like a baby kitten. Hand me a glass of wine and a pillow because its lights out.

And the next day?

I always feel as if I could tame the world. Refreshed even.

I have an excellent Asian dinner planned for the night. My wife however abhors vegetables, and typically abhors anything save for meat and potatoes. Thats not entirely a problem. However I prefer a wide and varied cultural taste to my food. Indian, Asian, Greek, German I like to mix it up night after night. It is probably a side effect of traveling for so many years.

So tonight I will attempt a stir fry dish I concocted several years ago, while in Asia. A common misconception is that stir frying is a Japanese invention…it isn’t.

Here’s the recipe, some music and some other random tidbits if your interested in such stuff

I’m a trifle of a coffee snob.

Not as bad as some, worse than others. I use a coffee press. I grind my own beans. I blend my own coffees. I have eccentric brands in my fridge and beans from far away places like Africa.

I am not a big Starbucks fan, as I’ve mentioned. I prefer my coffee made by me. I get a selection that I want at a quarter of the price and without all the mocha frappe latte whozit mumbo jumbo that I could care less about.

A friend of mine recently gave me a a box of Via.
I am not a instant coffee fan, but sometimes it is a necessity, especially in this fast pace world we’re in. I save my coffee beans for Friday, Saturday and Sundays, when i can slow down a little.

It wasn’t bad. I thought I might try some more of it instead of getting my regular ( Nescafe Gold usually. JFG when I can get it. ) type. I usually order my coffee from online and I could buy the Via locally. i thought I might save some money and get a decent coffee out of the deal.

Until I saw the price at Wal-Mart.

My “secret weapon” finally arrived. Which means I’ll be getting up at the buttcrack of dawn starting tomorrow (as if 5 am wasn’t early enough).

Swapped from Special K to Product 19. Calorie intake is the same but with more vitamins. I view vitamins as sort of akin to putting high octane fuel in your car. Its still only gas, but your car runs more efficiently. Human body is not much different. Keep high octane in it to help burn the unwanted. Thats my theory anyway.

Took the weekend off from the workout to give the body chance to recover, but not from the diet. Raviolli with low fat cheese, light sauce on Saturday. Smoked chicken on the grill with garlic and herb on Sunday. Made enough chicken to last the week more or less.

Yesterday was back to the grind: cereal, yogurt and chicken from Sunday. Although i did fall off the saddle.

Dough nut.

Some fool put a box of dough nuts by my desk.

Its like drinking in front of an alcoholic.

I managed to eat only one before placing them on the other side of the room, bu still the damage was done and it was devoured…….

Dammit.

Cigars International has Ranked the Top Ten Worst Cigars of the Year

Much like watching a train wreck, you just can’t tear your eyes away and of course innate curiosity may lend you to the idea of trying these.

The bargain price may make you hand them off to friends as a joke…or people you don’t want as friends anymore.

Either way the article as published was just too humorous for me to pass up on sharing.

This is what "deep thought" looks like.

This is what "deep thought" looks like.

As much as I love UGA, its getting hard to say that I support this team.  Don’t get me wrong, I am a die-hard fan, but the latest news out of Athens has me wondering.

1)  WTF were the 4 alleged players doing with bratwurst at 2:00am…

2)  Where did said bratwurst come from…

3)  What are the college students doing with a sex swing in their dorm…

4)  Why would you “threaten” someone with a sex swing…

Here is the link to the actual police report that has the actual account of the incedent.  Wait, I have one more question:

5)  Why didn’t the “victims” ask the taxi driver to stop???

"Don't slap me, I just want a little bite!"

"Don't slap me, I just want a little bite!"

Also don’t forget: Tonight at the Celtic Grill!

Any bloggers or readers who show up will get a free drink on yours truly

I’m easy to spot. Look for the Red bearded, short fat guy with the gray Irish Flat cap. I’ll be more than likely adorned with various “Kiss me, I’m Irish” paraphernalia, as its the only time a year I get them from the lasses :)

If nothing else you can say you hung out with the only Southern Irishman in Northwest Arkansas/Southwest Missouri

Hope to see ya there!
