With The Armorer finally going dark there aren’t too many folks from the heydey of blogging still around.

So whose left?

Well John DuMond of Nobody Move is still writing, and doing so with much more regularity than myself. I’m a frequent lurker there and rarely comment but I still like his work, especially his true crime pieces.

Harvey too, is also still running over at Bad Example. Again I lurk but do not comment often. Mostly because I have a hard time finding time to do much more than quickly read any more with work and school.

Laughing Wolf has been much more creative than I posting quite regularly.

Stephen Sherman aka The Commissar still runs his Ace Pilots page, but his Politburo Diktat is long gone.

Teresa and Technicalities is still alive and kicking

Doc at DocInTheBox also posts occasionally.

T1G of Drunken Wisdom is another sporadic like myself.

EricSWG of StraightWhiteGuy also writes sporadically, and well as always when he does.

The Conservative UAW guy last posted in May.

Nidonemo is still active thankfully.

The Ministry of Minor Perfidy is another who has not posted since May

Slobokan has been silent since April

All of the Northwest Arkansas Bloggers are gone save for myself.

With the exception of a few holdouts such as Blackfive, Grims Hall, This Aint Hell and Murdoc Online most of the old groups are gone.

Since I started writing online back in 1997 I have seen the web undergo a lot of social changes. From mIRC to OTC sites such as Tripod and Geocities, to the MySpace and Blog Heydeys.

All the folks I have listed above, for the vast majority I interact with via Facebook with regularity. They get tired of the spammers, the Chinese hackers, the internet drama, and the “Take this down or we’ll sue you!” crowd.

Its hard to blame them. I’ve been threatened with at least 4 lawsuits in over 15 years of writing on line. I’ve gotten more hate mail than I can shake a stick at. Its one reason I have rarely if ever used my real name online: the fact is there are just some plain old fashion sick people out there.

But I have also met some fabulous people, made great connections. Been introduced to some legends, and people who I consider friends today.

Blogs may be going to the way side, and one day it is entirely possible that this site too may go dark (though I have no immediate plans to do so) but until that time its much like digital cave drawings. People have evolved, maybe not for the better, but their digital social culture has definitely swung towards the instant gratification world of Facebook and G+. Even I use them.

But I can’t put down my keyboard, not entirely. I feel like if I do, a little piece of me might die with it.

The unbearable lightness of Lex…

For the last several years literally hundreds of us have been greeted with that banner, repeatedly.

Whom can forget the infamous “pink” Hornet?

For many of us we awoke and found those words painful this morning.

And thats not how he would have wanted it. Miles apart the modern world of technology has brought us close.

I’ll be holding a Cyber Wake here. All comers are welcome, for no one should drink alone.

I will open comments to the world for the night, for us to share stories of the indomitable Lex and hold as close to a wake as was possible with those of us who found him more than just a man, a pilot, or a Milblogger..but a friend.

Officially I’ll unlock comments starting at 18:00 Central Standard Time.

Unofficially, let this post start the works.
Let the stories, links, music and words flow freely and let the dancing begin.

No matter who you vote for or which ticket side or color you choose, your voting to help yourself as well as your friends, family and neighbors have a better life.

There’s another way you can help too.

Your donation will help a injured soldier, sailor, airmen or marine receive a voice activated laptop.  It’s not snake oil.

Your donation will them supply a Voice Activated laptop to those troops whom are injured to the point they can not type an E-mail or dial a phone.

Go to our auction site if you wish something to be given to you in return.

We here at ®Evil are answering the call: Team Army naturally.

Pick up Your Weapon and Follow me!

We have been helping the VALOUR-IT team every since its inception. We are proud to once again offer up our services, as well as our pride to assist them once again! Be ready for madness.

At ®Evil this isn’t a Fundraiser. This is a FunRaiser. Get ready folks it’s gonna be one helluva ride!

From Blackfive:

WHAT IS VALOUR-IT?
Project Valour-IT began when Captain Charles “Chuck” Ziegenfuss was wounded by an IED while serving as commander of a tank company in Iraq in June 2005.

During his deployment he kept a blog (an online personal diary, opinion forum, or news analysis site-called a milblog or military weblog when written by a service member or about military subjects). Captivating writing, insightful stories of his experiences, and his self-deprecating humor won him many loyal readers. After he was wounded, his wife continued his blog, keeping his readers informed of his condition.

As he began to recover, CPT Ziegenfuss wanted to return to writing his blog, but serious hand injuries hampered his typing. When a loyal and generous reader gave him a copy of the Dragon Naturally Speaking Preferred software, other readers began to realize how important such software could be to CPT Ziegenfuss’ fellow wounded soldiers and started cast about for a way to get it to them.

“At that time I had no use of either hand. I know how humbling it is, how humiliating it feels. And I know how much better I felt, how amazingly more functional I felt, after Soldiers’ Angels provided me with a laptop and a loyal reader provided me with the software. I can’t wait to do the same, to give that feeling to another soldier at Walter Reed.” – Captain Chuck Ziegenfuss at TC Override (wounded in Iraq)

Project Valour-IT, in memory of SFC William V. Ziegenfuss (Captain Chuck Ziegenfuss’ father), provides voice-controlled software and laptop computers to wounded Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines recovering from hand and arm injuries, amputations, eye or brain injuries, at major military medical centers. Operating laptops by speaking into a microphone, our wounded heroes are able to send and receive messages from friends and loved ones, surf the ‘Net, and communicate with buddies still in the field without having to press a key or move a mouse.

Folks, I’ve witnessed several wounded soldiers set up their laptops only to email or Skype their friends and comrades in the war zone to let them know that they are okay. Keeping them in communication with loved ones increases the possibility of a successful recovery exponentially.

THE COMPETITION

In order to fund the thousands of laptops we have distributed and need to distribute, we have an annual competition.

Valour-IT’s online fundraising competition begins today! Let’s see who can raise the most money to help reconnect our wounded warriors with the world!

  • WHAT: Friendly fundraising competition for Valour-IT.WHEN: October 28th through Veterans Day, November 11th . WHERE: Based in the blogosphere, spreading everywhere else.
  • WHY: Because giving wounded warriors with hand and arm injuries access to a computer supports their healing and puts them back in touch with the world.
  • HOW: Blogger teams will be divided along military branches, with civilians “up for grabs.”

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
You have been a part of our community in one way or another. THANK YOU!

We need you to simply blog and email regularly about Valour-IT and the competition with links to the Team Army donation page. Tell your friends, family and neighbors about Valour-IT. We’ll be providing media, links, and talking points for your Tweets, Facebook posts and blog posts, etc.

The competition is military branch specific and we’ve been drafted for TEAM ARMY.

Thanks for all of your support!

ALL THE WAY!

Soldiers’ Angels is a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit with hundreds of thousands of volunteers providing aid and comfort to the men and women of the United States Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, veterans and their families (Tax ID# 20-058-3451).

My middle east tour didn’t go anything like the majority of current soldiers, sailors and airmen.
Even when I worked as a DOD contractor doing telecom it was pretty low key save for a car bombing.

The infamous Chief Bill however seems to draw rockets, bombs, and general Very Bad Thing’s(tm) to him like a magnet.

Why Rocket Bingo?

It’s an old joke, but Greyhawk laid it out best a few years ago.

To the best of my knowledge, all Americans in Iraq participate. Rocket Bingo. Here’s a round-a-bout explanation.

Ever had one of those moments where you missed something by a mere instant, or something happens to someone near you? Ever heard one of those stories where someone misses their plane then that plane crashes? Ever wondered what turning left as opposed to right at some point does to impact your life? In a way, that’s sort of the concept of Rocket Bingo. Every once in a while nottheJapanese launch a rocket or mortar into one of our camps. It’s not a guided weapon, so who knows where it might fall. It’s often a dud, so it often doesn’t matter, but sometimes it’s not. The result? Rocket Bingo.

Going to lunch? Rocket Bingo. Staying at work? Rocket Bingo. Doing laundry? Rocket Bingo. The only rule is you have to play. Stay in your bunk all day – Rocket Bingo.

But the fact that you’re playing just stays in the back of your mind. You leave work with a buddy, “Hey, wanna go to the gym?” “No – gotta do laundry.” And you imagine yourself later saying “Damn – he should have come with me” – or imagine him saying the same.

Rocket Bingo.

Compared to the odds of walking uninjured off of Iwo, Rocket Bingo ain’t that bad.

And so it goes. However the thing to remember is while Bill was lucky. Boy howdy are we glad he’s lucky.

But this type of thing happens, even after two presidents have declared victory. Why? Who knows. Maybe they are just pricks. Maybe they just feel the need to kill some Americans. Or maybe its true that the really want all of us to be burned alive and cease breathing for what ever political or religious ideology that motivates them.

Something to consider with a HE round goes off next to you fired by someone who declares themselves to be Muslim….and NPR wonders why some of us get nervous.

Why Mrs Schiller? Why do we get ancy? A Perfectly normal reaction given the circumstances?

Because not everyone is lucky, madame.

The Mechanic is deployed yet again. So I have again been asked to assist in keeping some regular content at his website Frozen in Drum, a Fort Drum, and 10th Mountain focused MilBlog.

Drop in over there sometime, say Hi. Wander around.

Just make sure we don’t let the dog out unsupervised all right?

On my way to work the sun shined.

The smell of fresh cut hay wafted in to my truck over that of my coffee.

Passed a farm near my home where horses ran free.

And the sunrise this morning?

Just gorgeous.

I had a E-mail from someone I contacted yesterday in my Inbox with a whole lot of paperwork.

And I was happy about it.

Its not a big change and it’s not guaranteed.

But hell I gotta try. If you never swing you never get a hit.

I do not know  whether it was the E-mail I got, or the one I sent, or even the decision behind it all.

But today is a beautiful day.
