Doctoral References

Last Update: May 3, 2016

This is for folks who are pursuing or thinking of pursuing their doctorate. It’s a collection of helpful (or what I have found to be helpful anyway)  links that have been cobbled together from my fellow students, information from my many professors, and some that I have found on my own.

Don’t take any of this as gospel as your program may  vary some, otherwise all of these links and informational videos are excellent guide’s to assist you in either research, motivation, or validation in your own thesis or research work.

Instrument, Validity and Reliability

Validity and Reliability – A Word Document put together by Purdue University regarding Validity and Reliability.

Reggie Taylor – Reggie has quite possibly the most complete set of You Tube video’s that will walk you through almost every aspect of your thesis that is available on the internet.

AP Statistics – Experiment Design Basics and Terms A short video regarding the basics of experimental design in statistics and definitions regarding it.

Modern Statistics, Exploratory Data Analysis, and Design of Experiments- A video on Modern Statistics, Exploratory Data Analysis, and Design of Experiments for Improving Reliability of Aging Engineering Structures   by Jeffrey Fong of National Physical Laboratory and NIST

Experimental Design, Basic Statistics, and Sample Size Determination- A slides+audio lecture for the Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing, recorded in 2003. Prof. Karl Broman (now at the University of Wisconsin-Madison) introduces experimental design, basic statistics, and sample size determination in 39 minutes. The audio quality is not great; the initial bit is the worst of it.

Social Research Methods Knowledge Database – A database of research terms, formats and concepts and methods. Very useful in helping extrapolate information when you are having a hard time with a concept (at least it was for me)

MERLN – MERLN is a consortium of military education research libraries working together to provide access to a variety of unique resources for the use of researchers and scholars.  The MERLN website is maintained by the National Defense University Libraries staff in Washington, D.C. and Norfolk, VA

Research Software

Apple/Mac

TAMS Analyzer is a coding and extraction program for qualitative research projects. TA supports text, rtf, rtfd file formats; multiple coders; hierarchical codes; complex searching for information; inter-rater reliability tests; many options for formatting the output of searches; and easy export to Excel and other database

QDA Miner for the Mac computer assisted qualitative analysis software.  It can be used for the analysis of textual data such as interview and news transcripts, open-ended responses, etc. as well as for the analysis of still images.  It offers basic CAQDAS features such as:

  1. Importation of documents from plain text, RTF, HTML, PDF as well as data stored in Excel, MS Access, CSV, tab delimited text files,
  2. Importation from other qualitative coding software such as Altas.ti, HyperResearch, Etnograph, from transcription tools like Transana and  Transcriber as well as from Reference Information System (.RIS) files.
  3. Intuitive coding using codes organized in a tree structure.
  4. Ability to add comments (or memos) to coded segments, cases or the whole project.
  5. Fast Boolean text search tool for retrieving and coding text segments.
  6. Code frequency analysis with bar chart, pie chart and tag clouds.
  7. Coding retrieval with Boolean (and, or , not) and proximity operators (includes, enclosed, near, before, after).
  8. Export tables to XLS, Tab Delimited, CSV formats, and Word format
  9. Export graphs to BMP, PNG, JPEG, WMF formats.
  10. Single-file (*.qdp) project format.

Max QDA  for Windows and Mac is a professional software for qualitative and mixed methods data analysis.Organize, evaluate, code, annotate and interpret all kinds of data, create easy-to-read reports and visualisations, and connect and share with other researcher

NVivo first software for qualitative data analysis built to OS X guidelines, offering you a true Mac experience. It enables you to work with content from documents, web pages, PDFs, audio and video, enabling you to evaluate, interpret and uncover social phenomena.

Writing

How to avoid Passive Voice

Writing in the Dark – Max Van Manen has put together what I consider some of the best guide materials for writing qualitative research work that I have found. Its easily understood, and well presented. Writing in the Dark is one of my favorites by him, though he has several.

Writing Great Research: Professor Simon Peyton Jones, Microsoft Research, gives a guest lecture on writing. Seven simple suggestions: don’t wait – write, identify your key idea, tell a story, nail your contributions, put related work at the end, put your readers first, listen to your readers. Prof. Peyton Jones’ lecture contained a lot of question and answer sessions with the audience. These have been removed from this video, cutting the original 50 minute lecture down to 30 minutes.
